PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

It's very hard to believe it is almost July.  That means it's time to celebrate the birth of our nation with the 4th of July Celebration in Oviedo.  This event is held at the Oviedo Mall and there is an impressive fireworks display to end the day.  It is one of the major events we cover for the City and in return we get a booth at the event and the use of the Cultural Center for our meetings.

It won't come as a surprise to anyone that I enjoy taking photos at events. Yes, even I think at times "not another event to do."  I start walking around the venue looking for something different to take a photo of and I always manage to find it.  Sometimes I even get a decent picture of it.  Another bonus is running into and talking with friends from work, other groups I belong to, and the many great friends I've made among the City officials, Recreation & Parks staff, and the vendors while covering events for the club.  Oviedo is filled with great people and the events are a way to meet and photograph people you wouldn't normally get to know.

I hope you come to the July 4th Celebration and take the opportunity to see old friends, make some new ones, support and promote our club, and photograph the red, white and blue.

PHOTOGRAPHING FIREWORKS

Shooting fireworks can be easier than you think.  Google the subject and you will get a list of hundreds of sites.  Look at a few for tips, tricks and advice and a lot of example photographs.  Here are the most common tips:
  1. Pick your location before it gets dark thinking about where the fireworks may be in the sky.  This is Florida, look down - watch out for fire ant beds.  Look behind you, check to make sure you aren't blocking the shots or view of others who got there first. Also make sure you have permission to be where you want to take your photos from.
  2. Use a tripod. You can take hand held photos but you will likely have squiggly fireworks which isn't always a bad thing.
  3. Turn off image stabilization.
  4. Shoot in manual everything, don't miss shots while your camera is deciding what settings to use or where to focus.
  5. Set your shutter speed between 100 - 200 ISO. The sky is dark, but the fireworks aren't and that's what you want to capture.
  6. Set your aperture for good depth of field between f/8 to f/16 or more. We're used to using wide apertures in low light but this isn't low light photography.
  7. Either prefocus, focus on infinity or focus on the first shots and then turn autofocus off.  Be careful not to change the focus while you're shooting.
  8. Use a cable release to avoid shaking the camera.  Forgot it, or don't have one, use the timer on your camera.
  9. Use a long exposure. How long?  It depends on what you want to capture: part of a burst, one burst, several bursts.  For this you will need to experiment as you shoot. You can set a specific exposure time or with a cable release you can use the bulb setting.  Then you can hold down the button and keep the shutter open for as long as you like.  By doing this you can easily vary the exposure time from shot to shot.  Remember, even with a low ISO and narrow aperture, sensor noise increases the longer the shutter is open.
  10. Use a zoom lens.  You can zoom in for close ups and out to get large bursts or multiple bursts.  You can also experiment and zoom in or out while the shutter is open.
  11. Another way to experiment, use a long exposure but bring a dark hat or piece of foam core to block the lens between bursts to create multiple exposures in camera.
  12. Take a lot of shots early in the show.  The finale is the star of the show but the smoke can build up and obscure the bursts.
Finally be courteous of those around you, both photographers and spectators.  If you check your shots, shield the display to avoid blinding others.  Don't use your flash; it won't do anything for your photo and it will destroy the night vision of everyone nearby.  It will also affect other's photos.  For the same reason don't shine a flashlight around to adjust your settings.  And please don't change your location after the fireworks begin unless you are positive you won't be walking through or blocking someone else's shots.

JULY FIELD TRIP  -  "WHAT IS IT?"

 WHAT IS IT?

When: Anytime before July 17

Where: Anywhere

Take a break from the heat and organize your own field trip around your home, your work or anyplace you happen to go before our July Photo Review.  Your mission is to find common, everyday objects and photograph them in a way that it isn't quite so easy to figure out just what that item is.  You might take a photo of a gadget that no-one knows what it is or zoom in for a detail shot to try and disguise something we would all recognize if we saw the whole item.  For inspiration you might want to check out the Zenfolio galleries from 2016 2014 or 2013 for some inspiration.  There will be a gallery on Zenfolio in case you want to post some of your shots in advance and all of the photos shown at the review will be added after the meeting.  At our meeting we will have an informal competition to see who can best figure out "What Is It."

JULY MONTHLY PHOTO CHALLENGE
Our subjects for July are:

Phone photo - Look for something that starts with O.  It could be anything, a color, an object, a pet name Obie, a person named Oscar?  You choose.  If you like the challenge, repeat it with a different letter when you run out of things to shoot.

Macro - It's getting hot outside so for this challenge stay where you are and look around you.  What do you see? What is within your reach that would make an interesting macro or close-up photograph?  If your desk is as messy as mine, there will be a lot of subjects close at hand.

General - It's almost time for fireworks so that's the general challenge for July - fireworks.  The City of Oviedo puts on a great display at the Oviedo Mall so come and help with the event and stick around for the fireworks.

Composition - repetition can bring interest to your photos, whether it be a series of lines, rivets in a piece of metal or a group of similar objects.  Repetition is seeing a pattern and patterns catch our attention.  But you could also choose to break the rule and take a photo of a single object.  Should you be a rule bender or rule follower or does it depend on what you're trying to convey in your photo?

As always the challenges are just meant to get you thinking about taking photos when you think there isn't anything to photograph.

Whatever you choose to photograph please share some of the results with us at one of our photo reviews.

CITY HALL GALLERY ENTRIES
THEME - OVIEDO ABSTRACTS
The theme for the next round of photos for the City Hall Gallery is Oviedo Abstracts and the deadline for submissions is July 19, 2017. You may submit up to five photos taken of any subject in Oviedo.  They must have been taken since July 19, 2015.  We will be choosing five new photos for City Hall. The five oldest photos in City Hall will be moved to the Annex building to replace five of the photos currently there.

The submissions will be handled via Dropbox.  Please email the club that you wish to participate and you will be provided a link to a dropbox folder for your photos.  Do not create a Dropbox folder yourself to submit photos.  All files submitted should be suitable for printing a 16 x 20 print.  You will only be able to see your photos, you will not be able to see the other submissions until after the submission deadline.  All submitted photos will be renamed to be anonymous and submitted to our curator for the selection process.  You will receive a confirmation email after the photos are renamed and submitted so you can verify they have all been provided to the curator.  Once the selection process is completed all submissions will be placed into a nonpublic folder for everyone to see.  If your photograph is chosen there will be a $50.00 charge for printing and framing your photograph.  All photos will be printed by the club for a consistent appearance.
